Navajo Relief Projects

Navajo COVID Relief Project

In the spring of 2020, the Navajo Nation had the third highest COVID infection rate per capita in the country. The Navajo Nation encompasses 27,000 square miles in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. Approximately 174,000 people live on the  reservation. To reduce the infection rate, the Navajo tribal government imposed travel restrictions and put in place curfews and stay-at-home orders, making it difficult for many residents to obtain water, food and other household essentials.

To address these issues, First UMC and Native Grace Intertribal Fellowship marshalled their resources to provide food, cleaning supplies, personal care items, water and other essentials. That fall, the two faith communities supplied hay and lumber to provide food for sheep and horses on the reservation and fuel for homes. These projects were funded with a $15,000 Disaster Relief Grant from the Mountain Sky Conference of the United Methodist Church and other generous donors.

Native Grace Building Lives

An initiative to repair homes on the Navajo Nation was begun in the fall of 2021. The intent of the project is twofold: to teach young Navajo people basic construction and remodeling skills; and to give elders the opportunity to receive much needed home repairs.
